I have always hated the term dieting. Maybe it’s just me, but I find it to be a fairly negative term. People diet when they aren’t happy with the way that they are and they usually deprive themselves of delicious food in the process. That doesn’t sound very appealing to me. So, let’s switch the language. Let’s start living healthy.
About a month ago, when I stopped breastfeeding, I decided to start changing my eating habits and start exercising more in an attempt to find a version of myself I haven’t been able to find since before I had kids. The changes I have made have been small, easy things that any individual can do if they really want to make the effort. I never imagined what a big difference they would make in my life. Doing things like drinking water instead of juice or pop, and going for a walk everyday are just little things that any person can do, but just by doing it I’ve lost 7 pounds! In order to make sure that I am not over eating and snacking, I have been calorie counting and I’ve found its great because it hold me accountable for what I am eating and the amounts.
I’m not going to lie, it hasn’t been easy. Doing hard, two hour walks every day has made me super sore and tired. But it’s worth it. I am lucky to have found some wonderful products that help energize me after my workouts and help keep me from getting too sore to take care of my kids. (Carrying two babies around is hard enough without a limp)
While I have started on this journey to find my ‘perfect’ self, that doesn’t mean that I’m not happy with who I am right now. I have no problem wearing a two piece and showing off my stretch marks, scars from a gull bladder surgery and some excess weight that remains after having three kids. I love eating whatever the heck I want, and being able to bake and enjoy my food. (Which I am able to do because of my 2 hour walks) I think that loving yourself is one of the great secrets of life.
I haven’t always had a positive body image of myself. After I had kids I realized how ridiculous I was when I was in high school and thought I was ‘big’ at 130 lbs. It’s sad that it took me so long to realize that one of the secrets to life is being happy with who you are. I think that part of this struggle came from my mother always apologizing for her weight and struggling with different diets as I grew up. I have no doubt in my mind that the views and habits of a parent have a strong impact on the child. When I hit an age that I better understood body image, I would wish my mom would be happy with her body image and stop apologizing. That didn’t mean she should stop striving to find her ‘perfect’ self, but I don’t think anyone should apologize for what they look like.
I’m proud to say, that after many years of dieting, my mother has also finally adapted the same ideologies as I have. Despite being overweight, she has finally stopped apologizing for who she is. She is still working on losing weight, but instead of ‘dieting’, she is changing her lifestyle and trying to live healthier. While I have been working on changing small things in my life, the reality is that not everyone has the time or ability to lose the weight that they want by just drinking water, changing your diet and going for walks every day. Sometimes you need something more. My mom has found that ‘something more’ and is loving what it is doing for her.
