It has been about two months since we took Jack out of night time diapers and moved to big boy underwear. I have to admit, I’m really proud of how well he has done with not having bedtime accidents and telling us when he has to pee at night. Based on what I’ve heard from other parents, most kids don’t move to underwear at night until they are 3 or 4. Jack was ready by two and a half. After we moved to underwear and he got the knack of getting up to pee, I figured we were golden.
I’m not naive enough to think that Jack wouldn’t have the occasional accident, becuase he has. But every time he has had an accident the next night we were good again.
This past week? Not so much.
We had just gotten home from a vacation in Saskatchewan for a week when Jack had his first accident. And then his second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. SEVEN night’s in a row he peed in his bed.
Jarrett and I had NO idea what to do. We didn’t give him liquids after dinner. We made sure he went pee before bed. Twice. We reminded him when we left his room to come get us if he had to pee.
I am a firm believer in not going back once your child is potty trained and I didn’t know what to do if he kept peeing the bed. I didn’t want to start diapers again.
What we hadn’t considered during this time, was that the girls were sick and Jack was getting sick. Once Jack was feeling better, he stopped having accidents.
It seems like he was SO tired from being sick, that he couldn’t wake up to go pee. Or maybe he felt so crappy he just didn’t want to. Anyway, moral of this story is that this week I learned that illness can be a factor in bedtime accidents.
Something to consider when your children are sick.
