Guacamole is one of the dips that I make all the time for everyone who visits, and it is SUPER easy. I have been told by people who don’t like guacamole that they like mine. Plus, it is a great food to give babies when you are introducing solid foods.
What’s the secret? Simplicity. My guacamole has three ingredients – avocados, lemon and garlic powder. That’s it.
Here is the recipe.
1 tsp garlic powder
To start, take your avocado and cut it lengthwise. Take out the pit, and save it. I have a tip for you later once you have finished making the dip. Scoop out the avocado and put it into a bowl. Cut the lemon and squeeze the juice over your hand to catch any seeds. You may have to adjust the amount based on the size of the avocado and lemon you are using. Then add the garlic powder.
Once you have added all your ingredients, mash the avocado with a fork into a paste. Personally, I like little chunks of avocado in my dip so I don’t mash it completely smooth, but that is up to you.
Taste the guacamole when your done. You’re looking for a fresh, zingy taste that balances with the garlic powder. If you like more garlic taste, feel free to add more. If you want more lemon, add more.
Once you are happy with the flavor, you’re done and it’s time to party!
Avoiding Browning of the Guacamole
A common challenge you face when serving guacamole is that once you put out the dip, it browns quite quickly. I’m not sure where I read this trick, but I found a tip that if you put the pit back into the middle of the dip, the guacamole will brown more slowly than if you don’t. So, I tried it and I definitely notice a difference in the amount of time it takes the dip to oxidize. Now I do this all the time. Feel free to let me know if this works for you!
Great for Babies
Not only is guacamole great for parties, it is also a great food to give your kids when they are starting solid food. Avocados are a food that they recommend you start babies on, and I think it’s important to start building your child’s palate at an early age. Since this dip only has three ingredients, is a great introduction to seasoning for your child. Lemon and garlic – two staples in seasoning that are mild and delicious.
Guacamole was actually the first food that we served Jack when we started him on solid food. We decided to let him have his first taste of food during our Grey Cup Party when he turned 5 months, and he loved it! Just make sure that it is really smooth and that there are no accidental lemon seeds in the food.
